Chemical Spills

You should know the hazards of the chemicals you are working with in case of a spill. The chemical’s Material Safety Data Sheet has a section titled “Accidental Release Measures” which addresses spill protocols.

The response to the spill is dependent on the size (large or small) and the hazards associated with the chemical involved. You should notify the lab manager of all spills. The spill area should be isolated and the building evacuated if there are hazardous fumes. Small non-hazardous spills can be cleaned up with help from the lab manager. The mobile spill kit is located in the hall of the second floor. You should never try to clean up a hazardous spill. Serious injury could result from excessive exposure.

The consequences of chemical spills, especially if they are not handled properly, are real.

Prudent practices should be use to minimize the risk associated with chemical spill.

  • Work with the smallest amounts possible
  • Wear proper protective equipment when handling chemicals
  • Use secondary containers to contain substance in case of a spill
  • Develop a spill control plan when working with highly toxic substances
  • Have the appropriate spill control measures available
  • Never try to clean up a major spill
  • If a flammable solvent is spilled, the lab power should be turned off immediately
