Safety

Safety training is required for all personnel working in any of the labs at Grice Marine Lab. It must be scheduled with the laboratory manager prior to starting work at the lab. The training discusses how to practice science safely by understanding the potential risks, minimizing the risks, working with specific hazards, safety in the field and  emergency response procedures.

Practicing Science Safely

  • Know what the risks are in your work area
  • Read the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the chemicals you will be using
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as outlined for the work you are conducting
  • Assess and minimize the risks before you start or change a procedure
  • Always use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) based on the current procedure
  • Follow prudent lab practices:  no open-toed shoes, no eating or drinking in the lab
  • Speak up if you have questions or something seems unsafe
  • Know what to do in case of an accident or emergency
  • Emergency Procedure Notices are located in all rooms and offer guidance and important phone numbers
